The winning idea may be implemented by Tesco Lotus across its stores, realizing Retail 4.0 in Thailand.
Ms. Salinla Seehaphan, Corporate Affairs Director, Tesco Lotus, said: “Tesco Lotus is committed to using innovation to help us serve customers better as their behaviours change rapidly in the digital era. Innovation is also important for improving our operation efficiency. We believe that partnership underpins innovation, with each party contributing their strength and expertise in their own respective area in the creation of innovations that address the needs of the modern day customers in the new paradigm of retail. The Tesco Lotus Hackathon 2018 will be our, as well as the Thai retail industry’s first. We want to extend an opportunity for startups in Thailand, as well as individuals from any industry and students to take part in coming up with innovations that serve the needs of digital era customers and solve business pain points at the same time. Together, we will be revolutionising our retail industry towards Thailand 4.0.”

“What we are looking for is innovations that serve the needs of customers, which have been shaped by five mega trends, namely digital transformation, a healthy lifestyle, a new family structure and aging population, convenience & experience, and sustainability.”

“The Tesco Lotus Hackathon 2018 will be held under the theme of Revolutionising Retail towards Thailand 4.0. The ‘problem statement’ we have chosen for the first hackathon is to redesign Tesco Lotus Express experience for future neighbourhoods. We specifically chose Tesco Lotus Express as these are small-sized community stores that interact with customers on a daily basis. On average, annual transactions across all 1,500 plus Tesco Lotus Express stores surpass 415 million. We are hopeful that the ideas and solutions that are gathered during the hackathon will not only benefit our customers and our business, but can also be utilised by local community stores. This in turn will help to uplift Thailand’s retail industry to transform into Retail 4.0.”
Retail plays an integral role in the daily living of people and also enables many other related businesses including food, agriculture, financial, and logistics, acting as a significant distribution channel and consumer touch point. The evolution of retail towards Retail 4.0 is thus crucial for the development of other businesses.

Tesco Lotus Hackathon 2018 invites individuals as well as teams, from startups to students. Application runs from January 8 until February 20, 2018. Applicants can visit www.facebook.com/TescoLotusHackathon2018 to find out more about the hackathon and submit their applications. The Open House will be held on March 3, 2018 to allow participants to learn more about the Tesco Lotus business as well as other relevant knowledge from several industry gurus. The hackathon itself will be held over 48 hours from March 16-18, 2018. The judging panel will comprise management from Tesco Lotus, Chulalongkorn University, the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa), and the National Innovation Agency. The top prize, worth 400,000 baht, is a trip to visit Tesco Lab in London, United Kingdom, and a chance to meet with Tesco Group management. Other prizes will also be up for grabs, bringing the total to more than 450,000 baht worth.

“Aside from the prizes, we believe that an opportunity to work with a large multi-national corporation and seeing an idea come to life at Tesco Lotus stores will be an important milestone for the Thai startup community. There is also a possibility that an idea implemented in Thailand may also be utilised within the Tesco Group, which spans across 10 countries, presenting a unique opportunity for Thai startups to enter the global arena,” Salinla concluded.

dtac announces dividend of THB0.24 per share

January 30, 2018 – dtac reports service revenue excluding IC growth of 0.2% in 2017 amid intense competition in the wireless service market. Annual service revenue from postpaid segment has overtaken prepaid as prepaid customers continue migrating to postpaid plans. In addition, demand for data service remained strong, sustaining data consumption and revenue growth. EBITDA margin increased 5 percentage points in 2017 to 38.9%, and net profit grew 1.4%. dtac announces a dividend of THB0.24 per share, which is subject to an approval of shareholders at the AGM 2018.

At the end of 2017, total subscriber base stood at 22.7 million, approximately 98% of which registered under DTN, a subsidiary holding the 2.1GHz license from NBTC. Number of 4G subscribers and 4G-enabled device penetration continue to grow to 7.2 million and 51%, respectively. dtac continued to invest heavily in the network, with number of base stations under licensed network rose by 32% during 2017. Overall network coverage stood at 94% of total population. In addition, partnership with TOT on 2300MHz wireless business is awaiting approvals in order to increase 4G spectrum bandwidth.

Total service revenue excluding IC in 2017 amounted to THB64.8 billion, increasing 0.2% from a year earlier, mainly driven by revenue from data service. Moreover, EBITDA amounted to THB30.4 billion, rising 9%YoY from service revenue growth, and lower regulatory costs and SG&A expenses, which was partly offset by higher network OPEX from the densification of the licensed network.

Despite a huge increase in depreciation and amortization expenses, net profit in 2017 increased to THB2.1 billion as a result of strong EBITDA growth and tax benefit from extra depreciation of qualified capital investment in 2017. Furthermore, operating cash flow (EBITDA – CAPEX) in 2017 nearly doubled from last year level to THB13.9 billion.

Thai wireless industry continues to grow and be competitive. dtac will continue strengthening its perception and aiming to be the no. 1 digital brand in Thailand by 2020. We will digitize our operation, which would allow us to be more efficient and provide more customized and relevant offers to our customers, while realizing cost savings from reduced physical channels. We expect customers to increase the adoption of digital services and channels.
For 2018, dtac expects its service revenue (excluding IC) and EBITDA (excluding payment related to 2.3GHz deal to TOT) to be around the same level as the previous year. In addition, CAPEX of THB15 – 18 billion is expected to be spent during 2018.

Lars Norling, dtac’s Chief Executive Officer, said “Our 2017 results were pretty much in line with our guidance, with huge upside on EBITDA. 2018 is going to be a critical year for dtac as we are entering the final year of the concession. We have a strong intention to secure more spectrums to strengthen our network capacity in order to offer the best digital services to our customers. We have been actively participating in the industry consultation process for the upcoming auction of the spectrums under concession. In the meantime, we’ll continue to invest heavily in the network to accommodate the robust data growth, offer the best value to customers, and work our way to become digital leader in the market.”

Mr. Nuttaphong Kunakornwong, SC Asset Corporation Plc (SC) ’s Chief Executive Officer, announced SC vision and roadmap toward steady growth in three years. He said, “Every organization in this world is being challenged by the rapidly-changing landscape of global business. Old ways of thinking become irrelevant when digital technology is playing a massive role in transforming people behavior now and the future.  The new landscape is formed with connectivity of all industries, forming an ecosystem with diverse members and a linkage of various ecosystems. This creates a new business model featuring platforms and solutions, in addition to products and services, combining the following three aspects to better respond to human needs.

The first group: Incumbents or existing stakeholders in old industries.

The second group: Tech entrepreneurs or fast operators that come into existence to provide specific human solutions.

The third group: Digital giants or large-scale tech firms with tendency to expand their operation scope and business size to cover every industry.

Tech entrepreneurs and digital giants play an important role in linking various industries together.  To keep with the changing behavior of humans or consumers, the companies under the first group need to work with the second and third groups to survive and thrive in a sustainable manner”

“To ensure our healthy growth, SC announces our three-year roadmap called “SC-REINVENTION 2020”, targeting to achieve 24 billion Baht of sales and 22 billion Baht of income in 2020 with the total sales in 2018-2020 exceeding 60 billion Baht. SC rethinks our business approaches by transforming SC from being merely a “Developer” to become “Living Solutions Provider” by working with various partners in the ecosystem to better respond to people’s evolving lifestyle on this new business landscape.” SC aims to proper by 4 strategies:

1. RE-INVENTION from a “Developer” toward “Living Solutions Provider” through 3Ds.

- D1 Digitize: Transform work system from analog toward digital to incorporate big data in terms of our work and consumer insights to analyze and develop our operations.

- D2 Design: Use Human-Centric Approach to design our products & services and solutions by starting from our understanding of pain points in customers’ lifestyle.

- D3 Develop: Incorporate innovations in quality property development for every price level.

2. CO-CREATION Work with business partners in the ecosystem to develop Living Solutions (SC residential property development & after-sales service, coupled with other services by our business partners) for our customers and nearby communities. Our Living Solutions Platform is called “Rue Jai”.

3. Quality First: The quality of SC products and services, categorized into “pre-transfer and after-transfer, is our highest priority.

4. TOP-LINE GROWTH: Expand in terms of top-line both volume and value of property projects to continue driving SC growth, while property leasing project, currently covering 110,000 square meters is our secured income, representing one-fourth of SC net profit.

Property projects for sales are classified as horizontal and vertical projects

- Horizontal projects: SC has maintained our leadership in detached home segment, priced over 8 million Baht, and planned to increase the market share of detached home segment, lower than 8 million Baht, and townhome worth around 2-3 million Baht per unit. This year, SC will expand our property development projects to Chachoengsao province, perceiving urbanization potential from the prospective Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) mega project. In 2020, the ratio of SC horizontal projects in Bangkok and provinces will be 90:10.

- Vertical project: SC and SCOPE, a new joint venture with SC holding 90 percent share under the leadership of CEO Mr. Yongyuth Chaipromprasit, plan to develop more than 10 vertical projects this year. The main income of vertical projects in the next three years will come from the transfer of three super luxury projects namely SALADAENG ONE, BEATNIQ and 28 CHIDLOM.

SC targets to achieve sales and income in 2018 of 17 billion Baht with the sales rising around 11 percent. SC plans to launch 19 projects worth 19 billion Baht. Seventeen projects of them are horizontal projects worth 15 billion Baht and two vertical projects worth 4 billion Baht. SC allocates 10 billion Baht of budget to buy land this year.

“Highlight of our new horizontal projects this year is two township concept development projects on two locations, one in Krungthep Kreetha in the Eastern part of Bangkok and the other is located in Bang Kradee, Pathum Thani, in the Western part of Bangkok, covering more than 200 rais, which will be offered for sales in the second half of 2018.”

In addition, 50 percent of new projects this year will be under PAVE and VERVE brands which will be single houses and townhome worth between 2-5 million Baht, in line with an expected growth in market share of this market segment in 2018-2020.

SC vertical projects in the pipeline include Centric Ratchayothin, situated close to BTS Ratchayothin station or only 150 meters away. It is a 1.5-billion Baht high-rise, comprising 21 floors, with the starting price at 3.7 million Baht. Centric Ratchayothin’s pre-sale will happen in March this year.  Meanwhile, the 2.5-billion Baht Crest project on Sukhumvit 23 will be offered for sales in the fourth quarter.

Mr. Nuttaphong summed up, “In 2017, SC hit new records both in terms of total sales of 15.278 billion Baht and horizontal projects of 10.547 billion Baht. Thus, SC commands No. 1 market share for detached house segment priced over 15 million Baht and No. 2 for all detached house market. SC sales from word-of-mouth generated 18 percent of the total sales, showing trust that we have earned from our customers, in addition to superb quality of our residential products and services. In 2018, the business landscape has changed. To ensure SC healthy growth, we will not stick with old ways of doing business. Instead, we are ready to re-invent and work with our partners in the ecosystem to deliver high-quality living solutions with optimal quality to our customers.”

Let’s just say dogs are human’s best friends, and you won’t be surprised to see how many places and products are putting on their best dog-themed decorations to welcome their favorite Chinese astrology: Year of the Dog. SEA LIFE Bangkok, the world-class aquarium located in the heart of the city: B1-2 fl., Siam Paragon, is no different. The aquarium joins the festive fun their own way – displaying three dog-related fish species. The first one with the most resemblance to dogs is the Dog-Faced Puffer with its round eyes and dog-like snout, but that is where the resemblance ends, as the puffer has the deadly Tetrodotoxin that is up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. Wolf Eels are eels with features of wolfish fierceness, and strong jaws that easily allow them to handle hard-shell preys. Wolf Fish has the most striking characteristic feature, with its large head and wide gaping mouth with sharp fangs. All displays and other upcoming activities in 2018 are available only at SEA LIFE Bangkok.

The AHKFTAwill facilitate greater Foreign Direct Investment from Hong Kong into the ASEAN region
8 February 2018
Bangkok, Thailand – The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), in partnership with the Thai-Hong Kong Trade Association, moderated an in-depth panel discussion entitled “How the ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement Benefits Your Business?”
The event, which was opened by Mr. Peter Wong, Regional Director, Southeast Asia and India, Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), was the first major discussion between business leaders and policy experts in Thailand to examine the ASEAN-HK Free Trade Agreement (AHKFTA) since its official signing on November 12, 2017.
The AHKFTA is designed to improve legal certainty, facilitate the movement of nationals and increase market access for trade in goods and services between ASEAN and Hong Kong.
Prior to the panel discussion, Mr. Nicholas Kwan, who is the Director of Research for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, gave a brief, detailed analysis of the AHKFTA and the potential impacts on trade relations between Hong Kong, ASEAN and China.
“The ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement provides clearer rules on investment and is establishing a dispute resolution mechanism, which would facilitate direct investment from Hong Kong, especially those in professional services like environment, education and technology. Hong Kong ranks second in the world after the US with an outward investment stock of US$1,528 billion, even ahead of Chinese mainland’s US$1,281 billion. This FTA offers opportunities for ASEAN members, especially Thailand in the development of high-end international services.”
The Acting Director General of Thailand’s Department of Trade Negotiations, Mrs. Auramon Supthaweethum, also offered insights on the AHKFTA from Thailand’s and ASEAN’s perspectives in her keynote address. “The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) strongly encourages all stakeholders to utilize the ASEAN-Hong Kong FTA which is expected to be entered into force on the 1st January 2019. DTN will be pleased to provide detailed information on the ASEAN-Hong Kong FTA upon request.”
The afternoon panel discussion was an informative back and forth exchange that gave the Thai business community its first chance to learn from and interact directly with experts on the AHKFTA, which included:
  • Mr. Nicholas Kwan, Director of Research, HKTDC
  • Mr. Phairush Burapachaisiri, Vice Chairman of Thai Chamber of Commerce
  • Mr. Sunny Chau, Director of Thailand & Southeast Asia, HKTDC (moderator)
The AHKFTA agreement is expected to come into force on January 1, 2019, at the earliest, subject to completion of the necessary procedures by Hong Kong and the ASEAN member states.
Hong Kong and ASEAN have close trade and economic ties. Bilateral merchandise trade between Hong Kong and ASEAN grew by an average of 3.4 percent annually from 2012 to 2016. ASEAN was Hong Kong's second largest trading partner in merchandise trade in 2016, with the total merchandise trade amounting to HK$833 billion.
The average annual growth rate for total Hong Kong-ASEAN trade in services was 3.1 percent from 2011 to 2015. ASEAN was Hong Kong's fourth largest trading partner in services trade in 2015, with the total services trade amounting to HK$121 billion.
