Do’s and Don’ts to bring good luck throughout the year
BANGKOK, 13 FEB 2018 – Chinese new year is steeped in rich history with many traditions being observed to bring in good luck and prosperity. Also known as Spring festival, it is the beginning of planting season in the ancient Chinese history. It has been the most important festival of the year for Chinese people as well as being widely celebrated in Thailand.

With Chinese New Year arriving on 16 February, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, collaborates with with Viroj Tangvanich, the well-known Chinese specialized guru, to put together a Chinese New Year guide in preparation for the upcoming festive celebration. This guide will take you through some important facts to understand about the traditional ways to celebrate, and things to avoid during this festive period.

1. Pray to the gods - the first day of Chinese new year marks the welcoming of the gods of the heavens and earth. Be thankful for all the things that life has to offer. Paying tribute to the gods will also lead you to the abundance of happiness and good cheer all year round.
2. Honor your ancestors - honoring the family’s ancestors was considered the most important element of the celebration. They were recognized as the foundation of the fortune and were remembered with prayer and offerings. Show gratitude and respect for what your ancestors have done for you, such as bowing to a shrine dedicated to them or offering them food and drink as a sacrifice.
3. Reunite with your families - the family reunion dinner is one of the highlights of the Chinese new year celebration on the eve of the new year which falls on 15 February this year. Do get together and have a traditional fish ball soup as its round shape represents the family unity.
4. Mind your language - no foul language and certainly no unlucky words since new year’s eve onwards because it sets a precedent for the rest of the year. Keep talking nicely to each other brings you the good luck.
5. Don’t clean your home on Post-New Year – Sweeping or dusting should not be done in Chinese new year for fear that good fortune will be swept away. The entire house should be clean before the day arrives.
6. Needle work should not be done - keep the sewing activity for later as there is symbolism attached to bad fortune.
7. Avoid using sharp objects - The use of knives and scissors is to be avoided for any accident, whether harming a person or tool, is thought to lead to inauspicious things, broken relationships and the depletion of wealth in the coming year.
8. Don’t do the laundry - do away with washing clothes to avoid working hard on the new year as well as avoid offending Chinese god, whose birthday falls on the first and second day of the lunar calendar.
Apart from following the guide to improve your luck throughout this year, enjoy Chinese new year celebration with your loved ones and don’t forget to splurge your angpao wisely at Shopee. From 15 - 19 February, Shopee will be welcoming the Chinese new year with special product collections curated across various product categories starting from 88 Baht to serve all you need in this new year. Shoppers can also get 8% cash back at every 100 Baht purchase in a form of Shopee coin during this period.

New Common Criteria Certification for Aruba ClearPass Increases Cyber Protection Assurances
for Global Government Agencies and Private-Sector Enterprises
Thailand, 19 Feb 2018 – Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company (NYSE:HPE), today announced that Aruba ClearPass is the first in the cybersecurity industry to be awarded Common Criteria certification for a network access control (NAC) solution, under both the Network Device collaborative Protection Profile1 and the Extended Package for Authentication Servers2 modules. ClearPass is also the industry’s first NAC solution to receive certification as an authentication server.
With this advanced Common Criteria certification, governed by ISO/IEC standards bodies and awarded by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), Aruba ClearPass was validated through an independent testing laboratory to ensure it adheres to strict government and defense cybersecurity standards. ClearPass empowers Information Technology teams with the ability to intelligently profile, authenticate, and authorize users, systems, and devices to access network and IT resources. ClearPass allows government agencies and private organizations to rely on Common Criteria certification as assurance for providing a global, independent, and certifiable cybersecurity baseline.
Mobile, cloud, and IoT have imposed new demands on cybersecurity professionals. Aruba ClearPass is designed for this new era of threats and it was awarded Common Criteria certification for the Network Device Collaborative Protection Profile after completing tests focused on a set of demanding security requirements that mitigate a series of well-defined threats. Tests replicate real-world threat situations covering all aspects of access control including encryption, physical security, certificate validation, and processing, along with TLS/SSL processing. NDcPP represents a security baseline for any network-connected device or system.
As an important complement to NDcPP, Aruba ClearPass received Common Criteria certification for the Extended Package for Authentication Servers module. This extended package assesses functionality specific to RADIUS authentication servers, and qualifies ClearPass to appear on the approved product list for the US National Security Agency’s Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) program. US government customers deploying classified communications systems under the CSfC program may use ClearPass to securely authenticate user and device access over wired, Wi-Fi, and remote connections.
Aruba’s certification was granted by the NIAP, which is a United States government initiative that oversees a national program to evaluate commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) information technology (IT) products for conformance to the internationally recognized Common Criteria security testing standards.Tests were performed by Gossamer Security Solutions, one of the world’s most renowned security testing laboratories.
Common Criteria is a global standard to which security products are evaluated on behalf of both government agencies and private sector organizations who are focused on dealing with an increasingly complex and dangerous threat environment. Certifications are universally recognized by 28 nations and products certified in one country are recognized by all other countries. NIAP also works with NATO and international standards bodies (ISO) to share Common Criteria evaluation experiences and increase efficiencies by avoiding the duplication of efforts. To learn more, visit the NIAP portal.
“Common Criteria validation provides the highest level of security certification an organization can receive, which elevates Aruba network access control to new levels,” said Jon Green, CTO for Security at Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company. “Securing enterprises for the mobile, cloud, and IoT era has never been this challenging. The certification demonstrates Aruba’s commitment to providing customers with the industry’s most secure solutions for multi-vendor, wired, and Wi-Fi network infrastructures, even if it’s not an Aruba network.”
“Government agencies and enterprise organizations alike continue to seek clarity through the chaos caused by the increasingly complex and sophisticated threat landscape,” said Bill Buckalew, vice president of partner sales for Optiv, a Denver-based market-leading provider of end-to-end cybersecurity solutions. “We are pleased Aruba was first to receive certification status for such a well-established security standard like Common Criteria. Efforts like this from our key technology partners, such as Aruba, play an important role in enabling Optiv to perform comprehensive security optimization—from strategy and planning straight through to implementation and management—for our clients.”

Thailand and World Bank to collaborate on promotion of digital economy

Bangkok, February 26, 2018—Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) and the World Bank today agreed to jointly undertake activities that will promote awareness of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Thailand and adopt digital transformation in public and private sectors.
The announcement was made during a seminar attended by more than 150 representatives from the Thai government, international organizations, businesses, NGOs and the media, to launch the recent World Bank report, The Internet of Things: The New Government-to-Business Platform.
“Internet of Things plays a key role in our daily lives. Recognizing the importance of IoT in creating digital innovation that will boost productivity and improve individual lives, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) has endeavored to promote the development of the IoT in Thailand through various initiatives, saidH.E. Dr. Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister, MDES.
“The Internet of Things is not just a hype. We view it as one of the most exciting pieces of technology of the decade, which will help catalyze digital transformation in public and private sectors in Thailand. Therefore, we need to raise awareness of IoT in all sectors by providing a networking forum so we all can meet and discuss opportunities offered by this technology as well as ways to allow IoT work for Thais.” said Dr. Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin, the President and CEO of DEPA Thailand.

DEPA, an operating arm of the MDES, aims to promote the development of digital industry and innovation as well as the adoption of digital technology in all sectors in Thailand.  It is entrusted to establish the IoT Institute which will help create a healthy IoT ecosystem in the country. Through this seminar, the Institute marks its first step in promoting the development and adoption of this exciting technology.

It is a pleasure for the World Bank to partner with Thailand on making digital technologies and Internet of Things work for the benefit of all,” said Shabih A. Mohib, the Bank’s Program Leader for Equitable Growth, Finance & Institutions, in Thailand.

“IoT has significant potential, but it requires systematic, informed work by the government, private sector, and civil society.  I hope this study will help examine the progress made in Thailand and encourage further thinking and discussions among policymakers and the private sector on the social and economic impacts of leveraging IoT applications.,” said Prasanna Lal Das, lead author of the report.

IoT refers to a digital system involving connected devices that gather data through sensors, transmit it over networks, and generate analytics; in some cases, adapting behavior and responses based on local conditions. Examples of IoT are Global Positioning System (GPS) devices that track and provide real-time transit updates; sensors mounted on lampposts that measure and share pollution data; and smart thermostats, which adjust home temperatures based on people’s routine, helping cut heating and cooling bills.
According to the report – the first to examine the progress made by governments incorporating Internet of Things (or IoT) within their functions – many governments are eager to use IoT to better serve people, despite the obstacles of taking initiatives beyond the pilot stage. The business models to sustain IoT infrastructure could be developed further, and the policy landscape could be improved.  Policy recommendations include:

  • Improving the knowledge and familiarity of most government agencies of IoT and its relevance to their immediate functions;
  • Translating “hype to reality” and preparing ‘toolkits’ on how to implement initiatives that include IoT components;
  • Disseminating “lessons” from peers, as many agencies are keen to learn about initiatives in other countries, and what had worked or had not.

BANGKOK – March 21, 2018 – LINE announced the launch of “LINE SCALEUP,” a program aimed at helping Thai startups to scale their services to millions of LINE users potentially. LINE SCALEUP will provide 1) LINE Messaging API (on LINE@ account) free of charge with an upgrade path to an Official Account worth THB 5,000,000 2) tech consultation with the LINE Engineering team 3) and funding opportunities with a USD 10 million fund for Thailand.
As today onwards, LINE SCALEUP program opens its application all year round for any startups who has potential on developing a new product/service integrated on
LINE platform efficiently by providing LINE@ Pro+ account with LINE Messaging API as the main tool to develop a product/service along with technical support from
the LINE Engineering team. All of these benefits will be offered differently to certain startups upon each team’s capabilities and performance.
Mr. Ariya Banomyong, Managing Director, LINE Thailand said “The majority of Thai startups nowadays are still at the seed level, and Thailand still lacks a unicorn, or major startups going regional or global. One significant missing factor is scalability. Among the excessive number of apps created for both Google Play (28 million) and App Store (22 million), most users only download 32 apps for their phone, and even then they only use 3-5 regularly. As a result, users face an ‘app overflow,’ while developers and startups struggle to get their apps noticed. The vision of LINE SCALEUP is to help Thai startups scale, leveraging LINE’s 42 million users and 63 mins/day time-spent, and develop an eco-system of services for Thai users on LINE. ”.
“Based on traction and potential, some startups under ‘LINE SCALEUP’ might become strategic partners co-developing LINE services. We have also set up a USD 10 million fund for Thailand, and we are interested in acquiring Thai startups eventually,” added Ariya.
Mr. Peerapol Sa-ngamuang, Head of New Services, LINE Thailand added “There are several successful cases of using LINE Messaging API both from LINE services ourselves and external partners, e.g., SCB Connect (providing transaction notifications, account balance, points balance within LINE), Botnoi (a Thai/English, English/Thai chat bot translator), LINE Horoscope (consulting your personalize horoscope in LINE), LINE Jobs (searching and applying to more than 5,000 jobs in LINE), etc… However, with the endless possibility of LINE Messaging API and the different behaviors of users in LINE platform, we would like to see more initiative and creative idea of products/services from Thai startups. Through our program, LINE will work with startups to build incredible services on LINE platform and support startups to SCALE to another level with all the support LINE can provide.”

Digital ministry and dtac set up collaborative framework in fight against cyberbullying

$

(Mar 22, 2018) - Digital economy and society ministry and dtac have jointly configured a collaborative working framework on anti-cyberbullying program to address the growing problem in Thailand.
  • Digital ministry will coordinate government agencies, develop safe internet curriculum and fund academic research
  • Study found that one third of Thai children had experienced cyberbullying
Dr.Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Digital Economy and Society, said youngsters (15-24 year-old) have the highest internet penetration with 89.8% in 2017, according to the survey from the National Statistical Office (NSO). Thai people also heavily use social media, including 47 million Facebook account, 41 million Line account, 11 million Instagram account and 9 million Twitter account.
The figures above have the implication on the use of social media among teenagers, who have less digital literacy and have potential to be victimized
The ministry realize double-edged sword of the use of digital technology that children can be used inappropriately, resulting in a vast number of form of online problems. Recently, the ministry organized a seminar on anti-cyberbullying program, allowing stakeholders to offer their comment, which the ministry can develop and update national internet policy.
“This public-private partnership has marked the year of integration between the government and stakeholders to take action against cyberbullying and it’s a good start to jointly address social problems,” said Dr.Pichet.
Anti-cyberbullying is one of the government’s strategy to promote and prevent children’s right for the use of online media, aimed at building mechanism and system of digital literacy.
The collaborative framework covers five areas. First, the ministry will coordinate with the government agencies to create an effective referral system for the cyberbullying victims to Technology Crime Suppress Division if there is cybercrime-related case. Second, the ministry will extend the use of Stop Bullying Chat Line developed by dtac through its digitally-connected communities nationwide. Third, the ministry will educate safe internet use through young ambassador in school activities.
Fourth, the ministry and dtac will jointly develop digital citizenship curriculum and circulate all school nationwide via the cooperation with the education ministry.
Lastly, the ministry will provide funding for the internet-related research in order to understand more about safe internet use and cyberbullying in Thailand.
Lars Norling, chief executive officer at dtac, said dtac positioned itself as a child-friendly business in line with its responsible business, which is an integral part of the company’s strategy. It’s a heart of operation at all levels. As a mobile service provider, dtac realized its role of being responsible business and initiate Safe Internet Program in 2014 in a bid to promote safe internet environment for children.
dtac’s child-friendly business strategy can be divided into 4 pillars – raise awareness of Safe Internet use, integrate strategy in product and services to ensure  that its products are safe, seek child-friendly internet ecosystem and drive safe internet related regulations and policies. Last year, dtac has reached out and promote safe internet use to more than 27,000 students via school outreach activities.
Mr.Norling said Stop Bullying Chat Line was soft launched last June with more than 40,000 views and 278 victims, reflecting a large size of cyberbullying problem in Thailand.
“To address the problem sustainably, the company, the government, civic society or even intergovernmental organization cannot do it alone. We need to join forces and reinforce community and government effort to protect and fulfill children’s right, including cyberbullying space,” said Mr.Norling.
Assoc.Prof. Charnvit Pornnoppadol, Head of Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Sirisaj hospital, Mahidol university, said Thai teenagers are highly addicted to internet, spending time online 4.8 hours daily. The applications they use the most are Youtube, Line and Facebook respectively.
Citing his research entitled “The state of cyberbullying in Thailand among youths at Mathayom 1-3, in collaboration with 13 counrties, Charnvit said one third of Thai youths had once experienced cyberbullying. 34.6% of respondents had bullied and 37.8% had been bullied, while 39% had become a bystander.
47% of respondents said they had a chat with strangers, while 56% had befriended with strangers online. 65% allowed their friends to use their phone while logging in. 28% had forgotten to log out their social media account while using public computer. 6.5% had met with stranger offline. Surprisingly, 48% of them let other people know their social media account password.
Charnvit pointed out that people become bullies, potentially due to their mental and emotional disorder. Besides, online addiction behavior also associated with the cause of cyberbullying.
“Chatting with strangers both online and offline, letting people know personal data and posting their VDO clip online all referred to risky internet behavior, potentially lead to further cybercrimes including cyberbullying,” said Mr.Charnvit.
The problem solution is required an integration among stakeholders by promoting safe internet culture.
