  • More than 1 in 2 Thais waste an average of 4 Days of Annual leave each year due to poor planning.
  • A staggering 76 percent cite work responsibilities as the main culprit, while 31 percent lose out because they actually fear vacation planning.
BANGKOK - A regional survey commissioned by Beringer Vineyards, Napa Valley, has revealed that while the majority (86 percent) of Thais claim to ‘long’ for their next vacation and most consider themselves well-travelled (74 percent), over three quarters (82 percent) believe that they could have maximised their annual leave if only they were better at travel planning.

62 percent of respondents from Thailand even admitted that they have gone to a destination they have no interest in, just because someone else was willing to plan it for them.

The survey of over 5,000 respondents across five countries* was commissioned to better understand attitudes towards vacation planning – whether Thais have the know-how or a genuine fear of planning, to who takes charge and how much time is invested in making plans.

“We were shocked to find that there’s a growing trend of Thais who are short changing themselves when it comes to getting the most from their annual leave, given that they work so hard to earn it,” commented Chris Thomas, Regional Marketing Director, Beringer Vineyards.

“In response to the findings, Beringer has launched a campaign on the world’s largest travel site TripAdvisor, to inspire a holiday planning movement. We want people to see that making vacation planning a social occasion is the way forward. A little bit of planning can have a huge impact on the kind of holiday you experience and it’s well within everyone’s reach. We believe that vacation planning is always better when shared with others over a glass of wine,” added Thomas.
Survey findings also revealed that 31 percent of Thais actually fear vacation planning, 22 percent hate it and do their best to avoid it and 35 percent likened vacation planning to being at work. However, 96 percent agreed that sharing the responsibility of vacation planning makes it more likely to happen, and more enjoyable.

Annual Leave – Use it or Lose it
While well over half of Thais (66 percent) find themselves rolling over annual leave to the next financial year, or losing it completely, a staggering 86 percent acknowleged that they could have enjoyed more trips if only they were better at planning.

The main reasons Thais are not maximising annual leave include challenging work schedules / responsibilities (76 percent) and conflicting schedules of travel buddies (40 percent). Moreover, 14 percent shared that they find vacation planning so overwhelming that they shut down completely.

Against the Clock or Time to Plan?
Thais typically only start vacation planning just eight weeks or less before their departure date. They only spend an average of eight hours to research a destination, prepare an itinerary and secure the best deals.  They admit that this last minute approach does add to their stress levels unnecessarily. Only six percent of Thais would commit to more than seven months ahead to plan a trip.

Not so Happy Holidays
Unashamedly, almost three quarters (73 percent) are guilty of being critical of travel plans they have not helped to develop. In comparison, 29 percent of those surveyed frequently feel frustrated when they face criticism over travel plans that they have been forced to plan alone, and often feel on edge for most of a trip.

Turn Back Time?
The top three holiday regrets Thais would most want to change if they could turn back time on that holiday include: better destination research (73 percent), taking advantage of lower cost travel by booking early (64 percent), and encouraging social planning with friends to make planning more enjoyable (39 percent).

Getting Tactical
Committed planners use multiple tactics to entice their planning phobic travel buddies to input, align and get excited to plan ahead of a trip. Woman are more likely to set up a WhatsApp group, whereas men opt for a quick phone call.  While Thais are more likely than Singaporeans (47 percent vs. 36 percent) to attempt to arrange a social meet up to discuss plans, over 90 percent in both countries agree that sharing the responsibility of planning for a vacation would make planning more enjoyable, which could lead to a better trip.

Top 5 Planning Hacks:
1)    Be first– If getting your annual leave approved is tricky, apply at least 6-9 months ahead of time. You don’t need to finalise your travel plans then, but it’s highly likely that your request will be signed off quickly as it’s unlikely to clash with others and it’s typically too far ahead for work clashes to be predicted.

2)    Be social – You are statistically more likely to maximise your annual leave if you schedule face-to-face meet ups to plan together with your travel buddies.  Disguise these as regular get-togethers over a cheeky glass of wine, so as not to scare off the non-planners in your group!

3)    Be single minded – Don’t try to set the date, destination and itinerary at once. This will most likely lead to your group failing at the first stage of planning and paying a higher price if you are fixed on a destination.

4)  Slow and steady wins the race – Once your date and destination are set, slow down and make time to plan your itinerary together. Research shows that sharing the responsibility of vacation planning is more enjoyable than going solo.

5)  Public holiday panic – It’s true, the thought of not maximising every public holiday is sinful, but the reality is that no matter how quickly you move, airlines and hotels already have these dates marked too, so you’ll already be paying a premium.  Given using leave is more of an issue in Thailand than not having enough, consider using a public holiday to get together with your group to plan the best trip ever.

Notes :
The independently commissioned survey was commissioned in July 2017 and polled 5,000 respondents representative of the population aged 25-65 years old.

Growth rate of condominium in the past 6 years was approximately 67% per year. For only in the first quarter to the third quarter of 2017, a number of new supply accounted for 29% of the total supply or 4,281 units from 17 projects, representing property developer’s confident in this location.

This represents large developers remain confident in product development in luxury segment in this location consecutively.
**Source Nexus Property Marketing, October 2017

In a near future, there will be 8 new projects scheduled to launch in Asoke to Ekamai area. Most of them will be located in Ekamai and Thonglor area, being developed by large developers including Noble Development, Sansiri, Singha Estate, MQDC and Ananda Development.

Growth rate in the past 6 years was 9% per annum on average. An overall increase in average prices is in a positive trend, except only for a period during 2013 to 2014 when developers were more interested in high-end segment. As a result, prices rose slightly.
**Source Nexus Property Marketing, October 2017

Summary
“Asoke to Ekamai area is a potential location for luxury property development by large developers. However, a limitation in land plot and funding has become a factor driving developers to develop a project with niche, different features like high-rise high-end project, low-rise luxury project or a joint venture with foreign partner for financial and technology purpose. In pricing, when compared land price and selling price per square meter in projects in luxury segment, higher increases in land price were resulted from a limitation in land plot. Meanwhile, condominium selling price per square meter has risen consecutively in line with land prices. However, in 2016-17 launch prices were stable as developers shifted to focus on low-rise high-end project development. As seen in the market, condominium prices rose 9% per year on average while land prices increased up to 19% per annum. For product quality, as competition in luxury market segment is very high with an increasing number of new projects launched consecutively, product quality is better with different features depending on each project which benefits buyers,” Mrs. Nalinrat says.

Keep Your Heart Fit to Prevent Coronary Artery Disease

When it comes to life-threatening diseases, heart disease is of course among them. This is because it is one of the most common causes of death among Thai people, after accidents and cancer. However, there are many kinds of heart disease. A common and extremely dangerous one is coronary artery disease or Ischemic heart disease. It can happen to people at working ages.
Dr. Anan Kriangkraichoke, a cardiologist at Kasemrad Prachachuen Hospital, explained that in the past heart disease was common among people aged 40 years old and over. Women with menstruation carry less risk of the disease than men but the risk is equal between men and women with menopause. Thanks to medical advancements, they improve the detection of heart disease and reveal that people aged 20 years and over also carry the risk of developing heart disease.
More causes of heart disease have been discovered but not all of them are made known. The most common cause is gene. People whose family members have heart disease are likely to suffer from it. Ageing is the second most common cause. The older a person is, the more his heart and blood vessels deteriorate and thus the chance of heart disease is higher. The third most common cause concerns some diseases. The top three diseases that cause heart disease are hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.
Besides, external factors can also lead to heart disease. One of them is smoking because a cigarette contains about 100 substances that easily harden and clog blood vessels. Another external cause is presently popular fast food that has much content of fat which poses high risks of heart disease and dyslipidemia. People who overwork and are stressed also tend to have coronary artery disease. The disease is less found with those who work comfortably and are free of tension. Thus tension is another cause of heart disease.
Symptoms of coronary artery disease begin with chest pain. Then it disrupts heart contraction and causes pulmonary edema. A serious symptom is severe arrhythmia that may cause sudden death. It can happen to healthy people who regularly play sports. If you wonder whether you are suffering from coronary artery disease, you should note if you have chest pain, are easily exhausted or have arrhythmia. If you have any of these symptoms, you should quickly see a doctor for an examination. Those carrying the risk of genetically inherited heart disease should have their heart checked annually. People aged 20 years old and over should seek such checkups because the sooner the disease is detected, the sooner ones can take care of themselves.
Comprehensive health care is the key to cope with heart disease. It covers the consumption of five groups of food with low fat and cholesterol, enough rest, regular exercise (20 minutes a day, four days a week), and regular heart checks.

Trend Micro and Europol Partner to Arm Financial Industry with ATM Malware Protection

Joint report presents physical and network-based malware affecting ATMs
Bangkok--Trend Micro Incorporated (TYO: 4704; TSE: 4704), a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, and Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) today released a comprehensive report on the current state of ATM Malware. “Cashing in on ATM Malware” details both physical and network-based malware attacks on ATMs, as well as highlights where the malware is created.
ATM malware has evolved from requiring physical access to infect the machines to now successfully attacking network-based access using the bank’s corporate network. The report dissects recent attacks using bank networks to both steal money and credit card data from ATM machines, regardless of network segmentation. These attacks not only risk personally identifiable information (PII) and large sums of money, but also put banks in violation of PCI compliance standards.
“Protecting against today’s cyber threats and meeting compliance standards require increased resources that are not always available for organizations, including those in the financial services industry,” said Max Cheng, chief information officer for Trend Micro. “Public-private partnerships strengthen the global, ongoing fight against cybercrime, and help fill the resource gap for organizations. This report furthers Trend Micro’s commitment to helping law enforcement and private businesses mitigate future attacks and protect individuals.”
“The joint industry – law enforcement report by Europol’s EC3 and Trend Micro shows that the malware being used has evolved significantly and the scope and scale of the attacks have grown proportionately. While industry and law enforcement cooperation has developed strongly, the crime continues to thrive due to the major financial rewards available to the organized crime groups involved. This report assesses the developing nature of the threat. I hope that it serves as a blueprint for future industry and law enforcement cooperation,” said Steven Wilson, Head of EC3.
In addition to the public report, a limited-release version is available to law enforcement authorities, financial institutions and the IT security industry. This private report provides greater detail for public and private organizations to harden ATM and network systems and prevent future attacks against financial institutions.

dtac reports solid EBITDA margin and operating cash flow

$

October 18, 2017– dtac reports solid EBITDA margin at 41% and expanding operating cash flow at THB 4.2 billion in the third quarter 2017. The strong results were attributed to the continual effort to digitize core business to enhance customer digital experience and improve operational efficiency, and lower level of device subsidies as dtac put more focus on non-subsidy acquisition strategy.
Despite the decline in service revenue excluding IC of 1.5%YoY in the third quarter, full year service revenue growth is on course to meet the guidance. Growth of revenue from data service remained strong and dtac kept on investing heavily in the network in order to accommodate the robust growth of demand for data service. Number of base stations under licensed network rose by 42% YoY in the third quarter. Overall network coverage stood at 94% of total population. In addition, partnership with TOT on 2300MHz wireless business is on track to increase 4G spectrum bandwidth.
At the end of the third quarter 2017, total subscriber base stood at 23.1 million, with approximately 97% registered under DTN, a subsidiary holding the 2.1GHz license from NBTC.
EBITDA for the third quarter amounted to THB 7.7 billion, increasing 7%YoY, and EBITDA margin remained high at 41% for 2 consecutive quarters. The increase was mainly driven by lower regulatory costs, handset subsidies, and selling & marketing expenses, as a result of the ongoing implementation of various operational excellence measures.
Net profit remained under pressure from continuing increase in depreciation and amortization expenses until the end of the concession and in the third quarter amounted to THB 601 million, declining 9%YoY. Furthermore, operating cash flow (EBITDA – CAPEX) continued to expand to THB 4.2 billion, growing strongly from the same period last year.
Based on the results of the first 9 months of 2017, dtac is on track to meet the full year guidance, which remains unchanged. The outlook for 2017 comprises (1) service revenue excluding IC at the same level as last year, (2) EBITDA at least at the same level as last year, and (3) CAPEX in the range of THB 17 – 20 billion.
Lars Norling, dtac’s Chief Executive Officer, said “We report solid financial results for the third quarter and are happy to see strong EBITDA margin and operating cash flow. The digital transformation of our core business continued to improve customer experience and our operational efficiency. Moreover, densification of the network has been continually carried out to accommodate the consistently strong growth of demand for data service. The partnership with TOT on 2300MHz wireless business will further strengthen our spectrum portfolio. On the back of strong Q3 results, our financial position continues to improve and we are well prepared financially going into the final year of the concession.”

Trust First: Kaspersky Lab launches its Global Transparency Initiative; will provide source code – including updates – for a third-party review; will open three Transparency Centers worldwide

$

The Global Transparency Initiative is part of Kaspersky Lab’s ongoing commitment to assuring the integrity and trustworthiness of its products in service of its corporate mission: protecting customers from cyberthreats

Kaspersky Lab is announcing the launch of its Global Transparency Initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting customers from cyberthreats, regardless of their origin or purpose. With this Initiative, Kaspersky Lab will engage the broader information security community and other stakeholders in validating and verifying the trustworthiness of its products, internal processes, and business operations, as well as introducing additional accountability mechanisms by which the company can further demonstrate that it addresses any security issues promptly and thoroughly. As part of the Initiative, the company intends to provide the source code of its software – including software updates and threat-detection rules updates – for independent review and assessment.

As society today depends ever more on information and communications technologies (ICT), cyberthreats continue to proliferate and evolve. Because of the frenetic pace of both ICT deployment and the expansion of the threat landscape, Kaspersky Lab believes that increased cooperation to protect cyberspace is more crucial than ever. Trust is essential in cybersecurity, and therefore trust should be the foundation of any collaboration among those seeking to secure individuals, organizations and enterprises from cyberthreats. However, Kaspersky Lab also recognizes that trust is not a given; it must be repeatedly earned through an ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability.

Kaspersky Lab’s Global Transparency Initiative is a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to earning and maintaining the trust of the company’s customers and partners every day. The company has never taken this trust for granted, but it wants to strive for continuous improvement in every way it can.

The initial phase of Kaspersky Lab’s Global Transparency Initiative will include:
  1. The start of an independent review of the company’s source code by Q1 2018, with similar reviews of the company’s software updates and threat detection rules to follow;
  2. The commencement of an independent assessment of (i) the company’s secure development lifecycle processes, and (ii) its software and supply chain risk mitigation strategies by Q1 2018;
  3. The development of additional controls to govern the company’s data processing practices in coordination with an independent party that can attest to the company’s compliance with said controls by Q1 2018;
  4. The formation of three Transparency Centers globally, with plans to establish the first one in 2018, to address any security issues together with customers, trusted partners and government stakeholders; the centers will serve as a facility for trusted partners to access reviews on the company’s code, software updates, and threat detection rules, along with other activities. The Transparency Centers will open in Asia, Europe and the U.S.by 2020.
  5. The increase of bug bounty awards up to $100,000 for the most severe vulnerabilities found under the company’s Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure program to further incentivize independent security researchers to supplement our vulnerability detection and mitigation efforts, by the end of 2017.

In addition to launching this initial phase of its Global Transparency Initiative, Kaspersky Lab looks forward to engaging with its stakeholders and the information security community to determine what the next phase of the initiative – commencing in H2 2018 – should include. Suggestions for further steps, and requests by third parties interested in collaborating with the company, are welcome at: transparency@kaspersky.com.

Speaking of the need for this new initiative, Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, said:“Internet balkanization benefits no one except cybercriminals. Reduced cooperation among countries helps the bad guys in their operations, and public-private partnerships don’t work like they should. The internet was created to unite people and share knowledge. Cybersecurity has no borders, but attempts to introduce national boundaries in cyberspace is counterproductive and must be stopped. We need to reestablish trust in relationships between companies, governments and citizens. That’s why we’re launching this Global Transparency Initiative: we want to show how we’re completely open and transparent. We’ve nothing to hide. And I believe that with these actions we’ll be able to overcome mistrust and support our commitment to protecting people in any country on our planet.”

Kaspersky Lab will share details of the Initiative’s progress and additional activities regularly. By collaborating with its various stakeholders, Kaspersky Lab hopes that its customers and partners will join it on this journey.

First Greater Southeast Asian internet business of scale to list on New York Stock Exchange

BANGKOK, 24 OCT 2017– Shopee’s parent company, Sea Limited (“Sea”), announced the pricing of its initial public offering and trading of its American depositary shares on the New York Stock Exchange. As the first internet business of scale from Greater Southeast Asia to become listed on the New York Stock Exchange, this is a significant milestone for Sea and its businesses, including Shopee.

Chris Feng, CEO of Shopee, said: “The listing day is a big day for the Sea group, including Shopee as well as Garena and AirPay. As we embark on this new journey, we are excited about the opportunities it will present for our business, employees and most importantly our customers.

Our home market is an exciting region, with one of the largest millennial populations in the world, and GDP growing over twice as fast as in the US. Internet and smartphone penetration is still low comparing to the US and China, and we are confident in its continued growth and the tremendous potential this presents across our seven markets, namely Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Since Shopee’s inception in 2015, we have worked to empower local entrepreneurs and serve local consumers. For example, ShopeeThailand’s nationwide free shipping service provides cost-savings to consumers, while Official Shops provide users with an even wider range of product assortment from leading brands. Also, our seller-driven initiatives, such as Shopee University, serve to help local entrepreneurs and businesses succeed in an increasingly competitive online shopping environment.

The combination of our strong home-court advantage, a deep understanding of our markets, and our on-the-ground local presence has enabled us to identify and cater to their needs – and this is reflected in the success we have had attracting 1.6 million active seller partners, plus another 1,700 brands and larger retailers to our platform.

Looking ahead, while we are proud of what we have accomplished so far, we know we have a lot of work to do to continue to realize Shopee’s potential. We remain as committed as ever to fulfilling Sea’s mission to improve the lives of the region’s consumers and small businesses with technology.”
