Dow and Thai Red Cross provide clean drinking water for remote students

Bangkok, 24 March 2017– Dow Thailand Group, together with Thai Red Cross’s Relief and Community Health Bureau, Dow Water & Process Solutions, Unitech Co., Ltd, and Water Net PLC., funded “Thai Red Cross - Dow Clean Drinking Water for Remote Schools” project to install drinking water filtration machines and implement an effective maintenance system for 50 remote schools nationwide. The project is led by Dow’s world-class water filtration technology with the aim to grant access to clean drinking water, reduce illness caused by unclean drinking water, and enhance learning potential for Thai children.

Dow Thailand and Thai Red Cross have announced the collaboration on World Water Dayon March 22. The United Nations (UN) encourages all sectors to recognize the importance of water as a basic necessity of life including water conservation and development of water resources in remote areas.

Mr. Jirasak Singmaneechai, Managing Director, Dow Thailand Group said, “As one of the world’s leading science companies, Dow foresees the importance of bringing innovation and technology to provide clean drinking water which is the most vital resource of life. We are an innovator of clean water technology. This year, we are following the late His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s foot step in social services on the occasion of Dow Thailand Group’s 50th anniversary and SCG-Dow Group’s 30th anniversary.”

Lt.Gen.Dr. Amnat Barlee, Director of Relief and Community Health Bureau, Thai Red Cross said, “Water shortage for consumption which causes health problems among school children is a major concern that needs to be addressed. The challenge is the lack of knowledge in water management and quality maintenance. This collaboration is formed among various sectors to not only provide water filtration machines to remote schools but also to support knowledge, implement a maintenance system, and build a network to sustain the project. This is to ensure that Thai children can have access to clean drinking water, become less prone to illness, and can receive the education they need.”

Statistics from the Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health, reveal that only 36.88% of packed drinking water at schools in 14 provinces has reached the standard. 1.6 million of global populations suffer from unclean drinking water and improper sanitation every year. The majority are children under five years old.

Under “Thai Red Cross - Dow Clean Drinking Water for Remote Schools” project, Dow Water & Process Solutions has utilized world-class ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technology which provide high efficiency, can filter bacteria, viruses, and small particles including heavy metal and contaminants. The technology delivers consistent performance, and reduces chemicals. It requires less frequent cleaning, maintenance cost, smaller area for installation, and is reliable.

“Thai Red Cross - Dow Clean Drinking Water for Remote Schools” project will be active during 2017-2019 by focusing on access to clean drinking water and sustainability by installing water filtration machines in 50 schools. Every six months, beneficial schools, communities, vocational colleges, and partnering network will implement a maintenance system to monitor the condition of the machines, water quality, and filter replacement for at least five years post-installation.

The project will also harbor monetary support from private schools and the general public for each beneficial school to ensure the quality of clean drinking water throughout its lifespan and raise awareness of water resources among the youth. Grant funds refurbish community school in Chiang Rai and training program for volunteer teachers

The UPS Foundation contributed US$40,000 to the Thai Volunteer Service Foundation refurbish a community school in Chiang Rai and establish a training program for its volunteer teachers.
 
“Our vision is to provide every youth from the local community with access to education. This starts with providing a conducive, safe learning environment, and our volunteers are working closely with Thai Volunteer Service to renovate a school in the remote Huay Hin Lad Nok Community,” said Tan Boon Tiam, Managing Director of UPS Thailand.
 
“UPS also believes in creating sustainable solutions. This is why we are working with Thai Volunteer Service to develop a self-sustaining program where volunteer teachers are recruited and trained on a regular basis to ensure there is a ready pool of educators,” Tan added.

In line with UPS’s pledge to contribute 20 million global volunteer hours by the end of 2020, UPS employees will travel to the Huay Hin Lad Nok Community later this year to to renovate the school.

“There is disparity within every community, caused by various factors. UPS promotes volunteering and that is consistent with our belief that in order to achieve a just and peaceful society, everyone from all levels of society have to contribute to its development,” said Aree Aporn, Senior Manager of Thai Volunteer Service’s Citizen Volunteer Program. “UPS’s support enables Thai Volunteer Service to give underprivileged children in our community equal access to education without having to be separated from their families for long periods of time during their pursuit of education.”
 
UPS has been volunteering and donating to Thai communities for many years.  Past projects include:
  • Sponsoring free cleft lip surgeries to 60 children in Nakorn Srithamarat Province through a joint effort with Operation Smile in 2014,
  • Working with the Rajapruek Institute Foundation in 2015 to follow in the late King Bhumibol’s pursuit of regenerating forest from degraded farm land, including nourishing the degraded farm land, installing a water management system and using a few soil enrichment techniques to grow select tree species

The UPS Foundation has issued grants every year to various non-government organizations (NGOs) whose focus areas align with UPS’s four community priorities: Diversity, Environmental Sustainability, Community Safety and Volunteerism. In 2016, UPS volunteers contributed 2.7 million volunteer hours.

#Tip 5: Do not overlook an eye health check-up
This must be done regularly. Because many people focus on the physical health while they are overlooking eye health as part of our regular health routine. Thus it’s important to remind yourself to receive an eye check-up in order to solve the problem and detect eye diseases immediately. You should come for eye examination every 6 months.

OnTrack Education won judges’ hearts at Viking Pitch and earned Fast Track to Pitch Day of dtac accelerate batch 5

March 28, 2017 – The application deadline of March 31 for the dtac accelerate batch 5 is quickly approaching, and, like every year, dtac held Viking Pitch Clinic to give startups an opportunity to practice pitching in front of the judges and receive feedback from dtac accelerate alumni from batches 1-4. The winner was awarded to OnTrack Education, who received a fast track to Pitch Day. Mr. Piyanat Satcharattanachot is the CEO and Co-Founder of the education startup that offers performance tracker platform for students preparing to university admission, particularly in medicine and engineering.
The Viking Pitch Clinic kicked off with the enthusiasm of 51 startups who signed up for the event, held at Fuchsia Innovation Center at Muang Thai Life Insurance, a key partner of dtac accelerate. Each team had 30 seconds to pitch their idea on the stage, after which 15 teams were selected to the next round. The 15 finalists then received one-to-one coaching from dtac accelerate alumni who helped them improve their pitch decks before giving a 5-minute pitch, followed by a 5-minute Q&A from the judges in the afternoon.
Mr. Sompoat Chansomboon, Director of dtac accelerate, Total Access Communication PLC, said, “Most of this year’s startup ideas are around marketplaces for tourism, healthcare, beauty, medical, retail, e-commerce, photography, music, recreation activities, and LBGT community. Each team shared their passion and ideas to disrupt traditional ways of doing things through simple but effective solutions. The standard of this year’s participants are higher than ever, in terms of business models and pitching techniques that meet international standards. Today was a great starting for all the startups who also received valuable Q&A and feedback from the judges in both rounds. Good startups must think fast, act fast, and fix fast.
