Bangkok, 10 October 2016– UOB (Thai) today announced the comprehensiveness of its support for Thai startups as they navigate through challenges such as product innovation and funding needs for business expansion.

At its “Unlock Startup Growth by UOB” event, the Bank presentedthree areas where it supports startups, namelythrough training and mentorship, funding channels and regional partnerships.

Training and mentorship
To boost the growth of Thailand’s best and brightest startups and innovators, UOB has set up The FinLab, an innovation acceleration programme to help them refine their business models, value propositions and product offerings. Through The FinLab’s three-month acceleration programme, startups will be able to benefit from mentorship with UOB senior bankers, successful entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.
Mr. James Rama Phataminviphas, Country Head of Channels & Digitalisation, UOB (Thai) said that the Bank has long believed in nurturing small businesses to their full potential.  The FinLab is an example of how it helps to develop startups from a very early stage.

“The FinLab will help Thailand’s most promising startups transform emerging technologies into viable products and services that can grow and scale globally, benefiting Thailand and the world,” Mr. James said.
Funding channels and regional partnerships
Another key challenge faced by startups is in the area of funding, which is needed to develop concepts, products and services into viable business models. Through UOB’s partnership with OurCrowd, a global equity crowdfunder, and InnoVen Capital (InnoVen), which offers venture debt financing, innovative Thai companies will now have access to additional sources of funding.  OurCrowd invests in promising startups around the world. In addition, these startups can also tap into its global investor network to jumpstart their international expansion and business development.

InnoVen is a joint venture between UOB and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings to provide venture debt financing to innovative Asian startups operating in sectors such as technology, consumer, healthcare, and clean technology. With venture debt financing, Thai startups can accelerate the commercialisation of their business and increase their valuation without the need to pledge additional collateral or dilute their equity stake.
“Startups today benefit from alternative fundraising channels such as venture debt and equity crowdfunding as they look to grow their business in Thailand and beyond. Given UOB’s eight decades of experience in banking small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Asia and our strong regional footprint, we have a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of these startups as they make the leap to becoming SMEs. This is why we are well-positioned to support them at every stage – from early-growth to regional expansion,” said Mr James.

Challenging all Thai and Foreign Bikers to welcome 2017
Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business expressed his plan after being on post to boost “Vi-Thee-Thai” by combining the impressive local experiences via the “Thong-Tiew-Vi-Thee-Thai-Gae-Gai-Style-Luk-Sueng” campaign to attract Thai and International tourists. He wishes to continue promoting tourism activities to attract the qualified tourists. 2nd Ride to Khong’s Legendary scheduled on 13-15 January 2017, welcomes all Thai and foreign bikers to ride the bike for 300 km passing 4 Northeast provinces: KhonKaen, Kalasin, SakonNakhon, NakhonPhanom.  This bike riding is the World Class tournament.  Bikers will experience the wonderful natural and cultural attractions along the route.

Mr.Noppadon Pakprot, Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said after his being on post that TAT will prepare ahead of the overall market by emphasizing the strengths of the country: Vi-Thee Thai or Thai’s Way, and combining the impressive local experience through the communication on the basis of the unique endemic Thailand via the “Thong-Tiew-Vi-Thee-Thai-Gae-Gai-Style-Luk-Sueng” campaign.  The campaign is to convince tourists to attract new ways of local tourism and also to expose the Thai’s Value.  They also can share the unique experiences of Thai local residents and more.  For the communicating with the foreign market, TAT still use “Amazing Thailand” under the theme “Discover Amazing Stories in Amazing Thailand” for the campaign.  It is the TAT experience in using the signature of Thailand for attracting the foreign tourists all around the world.  In 2017, TAT will launch the campaign “Tar-Tiew-Karm-Pak (Cross the Regions Tour)” which is the biggest campaign of the year.  This campaign is to challenge all Thai people to reach the unseen experience and feel different from what they familiar.  Moreover, TAT also plans to promote the campaign “Tiew Dai Ngan (Work on Tour)” for those who are on work in the form of study tour and offsite seminar.  These can help continue the program “12 Cities do not Miss” which to diversify tourism and focus on a new niche market (Gen Y) through #Tar-Tiew-Thai-Nai-Sue-Online.
For the implementation of the international market, TAT will focus on creating a sustainable income and revenue growth over a number of tourists.   Focus also target to a new international market such as Muslim and the new businessman, as well as new market having the spatial potential of the high buying power such as BRIC countries, Argentina and Eastern Europe.  These focuses are planned in accordance with a policy to increase tourism quality and focus on expanding the market to tourists with high potential in spending.  TAT wants to present the luxury and creative tourisms to target those having income per person around $20,000/year.   Focusing will also target on niche market such as the model place for pre-wedding, the honeymoon place, Green Tour, Sport Tour.  Besides, TAT wants to push “KhonKaen” to be the special tourism spot by motivating and promoting this province to be the tourism city similar to Pattaya.  TAT expects the number of tourists to be more than 5 million each year.  This could work well by maintaining existing customers who have potential in spending such as the woman, the family and the baby boomer.  Promotion is also planned for tourism in ASEAN by having Thailand being the HUB for international tourists from Europe and Latin America to travel to the CLMV countries.
In 2017, TAT installs revenue target from the domestic tourists should be increased 10%, from 8.5 billion baht in 2016 to be 9.5 billion baht, as well as adjusts the income from international tourists to increase 10%, from 1.5-1.6 trillion baht in 2016 to be 1.89 trillion baht.
From the guidelines of pushing KhonKaen province to be the special tourist place same as Pattaya, TAT sets the campaign the 2nd Ride to Khong’s Legendary Event, which is the distant bike racing in Thailand.  This event will take place during 13-15 January 2017, starting in KhonKaen province.  This event continues the success of the first event in 2015, as an attempt of the old and new bikers who want to challenge on the World Class tournament in accordance with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) standard.  Moreover, they want to again get the cultural experience along Kong River.  The distance this time is 300 kilometers crossing 4 provinces: KhonKaen,Kalasin, SakonNakhon, NakhonPhanom.
“Last time, there were a lot of good feedbacks from both domestic and international bikers.  They were 1,262 bikers, 90% Thai and 10% international.   More than 300 million baht were generated as a local tourism income along the route.” said Mr.Noppadon.
Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) also said that KhonKaen is one of the Northeast provinces that appropriate for this event because KhonKaen is a center for trade and investment in the region and a lot of charming tourism spot as well.  In 2015, there were 3,881,646 tourists, including 3,818,917 Thais and 62,729 foreigners.  The income from only the tourism was 10,756 million baht.  TAT expects Ride to Khong’s Legendary Event will substantially motivate tourism in the area.

DESIGNED FOR SOCIAL MEDIA SAVVY AND THOSE WHO’RE YOUNG AT HEART
Penguin SIM introduces “Senior SIM” and “Youngster SIM” for seniors and teenagers who love to make phone calls as much as surfing internet to chat with family members and loved ones and have fun with all social media. The two new SIMs offer valuable package of calls and internet usage that allows the two groups of consumers to be able to control their spending with a package that worth using every second of it.
Dr.Chaiyod Chirabowornkul, Chief Executive Officer of Penguin SIM, discussed “The market has changed rapidly these days while there are more and more different groups of customers from teenagers and adults to seniors and foreigners from AEC countries as well as foreign tourists from other countries. The more diverse the consumers, the more different in terms of their needs. And that’s why we come up with marketing campaigns according to behavior segmentation. From our research, we have found two very interesting behaviors of our clients who are seniors and teenagers. For seniors, they tend to use smartphone to communicate with their kids or grandkids through social media while searching for information on the internet. But one thing they are so concerned about the most is how they can be in control of their spending caused by using smartphone. For teenagers, this is a huge group of internet and social media users who would want so many different things at high standard. This group knows that there are so many choices out there on the online world so they can compare things before they make decision on what’s best for them.
Mr.Pakorn Pannachate, Chief Marketing Officer of Penguin SIM, said “By doing market segmentation through pointing out the difference in terms of likeness, need and consumer behavior, we at Penguin SIM have seen the difference of what consumers in each segment need and that was what reflected from their diverse behaviors. Creating knowledge sharing session for Thai people to keep up with emerging innovation
Digital Ventures, the financial technology investment arm of Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) with ambition to drive changes in Thai banking industry, unveiled its perspective on blockchain, the disruptive technology in theworld of financial services and online transactions.  SCB is the first Thai commercial bank to invest in feasibility study in order to test the enterprise-grade blockchain technology with aim to build stable, real-time cross-border money transfer platform as it recently announced direct venture capital investment in Ripple, a US-based leading provider of financial settlement solutions.
Thana Thienachariya, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Digital Ventures said that “Many global banks and financial institutes are currently looking forward to blockchain technology as a promising innovation to enhance service level of financial transactions in various aspects, which benefits consumers in terms of faster services, greater security and better cost-savings. Several Thai financial regulatory authorities are also exploring the viability of this technology in embracing the global trend, as well as driving the country forward in response to Thai government’s Thailand 4.0 policy.
“We recentlypartnered with Ripple, a leading developer of blockchain technology,to invest in, conduct feasibility study and test cross-border money transfer system utilizing blockchain. This is a major move in Thai financial industry in adopting technology from world’s leading innovator to build real-time cross-border money transfer platform, whileaccentuating SCB’sstrategy to offer the best customer service quality. Therefore we are keen to take part in promoting the knowledge and understanding on blockchain technologyamong Thai people in getting ready for this emerging financial innovation”
According to Suvicha Sudchai, Managing Director, Digital Products, Digital Ventures, “Many people understand that blockchain is similar to a digital currency service known as bitcoin.  In fact, bitcoin is a kind of product that utilizes blockchain technology. Blockchain, also known as Distribute Ledger Technology (DLT), is a type of online database solution that helps create a faster, more secure and cost-saving transactions, with added level of transparency and traceability. The concept of blockchain data storage is an open membership that allows every node in the network to access, which is contrary to the current practice where database of online transactions is kept in one place or one organization.  Its consensus verification protocol allows the network to agree updates to database collectively, and these updates cannot be deleted.
Blockchain is similar to the Internet in the way that both are data storage systems that allow access to all users or members.  Blockchain is generally divided into two main types: public blockchain and private blockchain.  In this sense, public blockchain is similar to the Internet that gives equal access to all content for all, while private blockchain is like Intranet that allows data access to only authorized users or organizations.
Blockchain is currently adopted in various business applications including cross-border money transfer service. The fact that blockchain helps reduce processes in money transfer system benefits the business sector by reducing significant operating costs.  Benefits for consumers are faster, more convenient transactions, shortening turnaround time in cross-border money transfer from a few days to just a few minutes, as well as lower service fee and higher security. With these, blockchain is believed to become a highly influential technology in the near future.  Currently over 50 top global banks e.g., Standard Chartered, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Westpac, National Australia Bank (NAB), Mizuho Financial Group (MHFG), BMO Financial Group and Shanghai Huarui Bank have implemented blockchain technology for their cross-border money transfer system. As with other new technologies, blockchain comes with a learning curve and takes sometime before it becomes widely adopted. We have already seen that it takes over 20 years before the Internet becomes such an integral part of our lives, with so powerful influence that we could not live without,” concluded Suvicha.
About Digital Ventures

King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) showcases medical innovations developed by an integration of state-of-the-art engineering and medical knowledge with creativity. The innovations are major starting point for the institute to soon realize its goal to become Thailand’s medical innovator incubator.
Prof. Dr. Suchatvee Suwansawat, KMITL’s President, said: “Thailand is known as the medical hub of the region with strong reputation in health and wellness service. As the country is becoming an ageing society in the near future, we foresee the rising demand for health and wellness services as well as medical treatment. Coupled with the fact that Thailand welcomes more than 25 million foreign visitors per year, the country has very high burden in taking good care of everyone’s health. This also brings the rise in expenses on medical equipment import.”
To address this issue and help the country faces this challenge better, KMITL is preparing its KMITL International Medical College, which is scheduled for opening in 2018, to play an important role in supporting medical innovation development. KMITL has assigned the KMITL’s Research and Innovation Services Office, which has outstanding performance in medical equipment and innovation development project, to work closely with the medical college in integrating all knowledge and excellence, from biomedical engineering, engineering, architecture and science. The main objectives are:
  • Incubate “global doctors” who have in-depth academic knowledge in general and specialized medicine as well as great research and development skill and medical healthcare innovation development
  • Promote medical innovation development that best address the needs of medical professionals, patients and hospitals
  • Become the center for medical equipment and innovation research and development as well as database about medical knowledge, patent and commercial production
Prof. Dr. Suchatvee added: “The KMITL International Medical College will grow a network with other medical centers and hospitals in Bangkok to promote technological cooperation and realize the benefits for the country from local innovations.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ittipol Jangchud, Director of KMITL’s Research and Innovation Services, said: “KMITL has been working on medical innovations for some time as we are aware of our responsibility to support the national development sustainability. We have been trying to add value to the local raw materials and resources we have, especially bara rubber which has been used widely in public health sector for making gloves, injection set, diagnosis tools, etc.”
Using bara rubber in medical equipment manufacture is an effective way to increase value for the local production. At present 87% of local bara rubber production is exported as raw rubber while 13% is used for producing other products, such as automotive parts and medical equipment. However, the value of both raw rubber for export and processed rubber products are equal, meaning that there is high potential for the country to generate more revenue by increasing the volume of processed rubber production as well as to reduce import burden on medical equipment.
“KMITL has realized this for some time and been working continuously to improve bara rubber quality and find ways to create more value. This results in a series of medical equipment innovations, such as the rubber bust used for breast cancer diagnosis training for medical students and general public and artificial breasts that mix natural rubber and silicone to produce nearly natural breasts for breast cancer patients,” said Assoc. Prof. Ittipol.

Other innovations jointly developed with leading public hospitals are
  • Albumin Smart Test kit
  • iOS Application for Ptosis Diagnosis
  • Rehabilitation kit for hand and arm muscles

Prof. Dr. Anan Srikiatkachorn, Acting Dean, KMITL International Medical College, said: “The KMITL International Medical College will play a key role in such development by making the research process even more complete. We will help collect the real demand of patients and medical team which can be used as the starting point for innovation development. We can serve as a place where innovation is tested and collect statistics on actual implementation. We will then provide these statistics and observation during the test for the research team to use for improving the invention and to produce the prototype. We will support patent registration so that commercial production can be materialized.”
The scope of innovation development will cover four target areas namely, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and training innovations.
KMITL International Medical College, with its goal to train medical innovators and medical practitioners, will play an important role in this medical innovation development process. This will enable the country to reduce national dependency on imported medical equipment and innovation. At the same time, graduates from the college will be ready to become “global doctor” with good English proficiency, positive attitude, good understanding of cultural sensitivities and research and innovation development skills. The college will initially open for 40-50 students and the courses are conducted by experienced doctors and academics in Thailand and other countries. The students will have clinical training at Sirindhorn Hospital and Lat Krabang Hospital under Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s operations.

Pre-Provision Operating Profit increased 10.6% YoY to THB 4,382.1 million due to the improved operating income and better cost control as operating expenses dropped by 0.02% YoY. However, net profit decreased by THB 48.2 million or 5.7% YoY to THB 798.3 million, mainly attributed to a 16.7% YoY increase in provisions.
On a YoY basis, net interest income increased by THB 1,178.3 million or 19.1%, resulting from a decrease in interest expenses by 23.8%. Net fee and service income increased by THB 92.3 million or 8.2%, mainly due to higher hire-purchase and financial lease fees and mutual funds fees. Total other operating income decreased by THB 851.8 million or 42.7% mainly from treasury businesses.

Operating expenses dropped by THB 0.9 million or 0.02% from lower premises and equipment expenses, partially offset by higher employee expenses. The cost to income ratio decreased to 54.8% in 9M2016 compared to 57.3% in 9M2015 as a result ofbetter cost management and increased income.

Net Interest Margin (NIM) over earning assets stood at 3.76% in 9M2016, compared to 3.16% from 9M2015, as a result of more efficient funding cost management.

The gross non-performing loans (“NPL”) stood at THB 9.1 billion, with an equivalent gross NPL ratio of 4.2%. This is an increase from 3.1% as at 31 December 2015, due to slower repayment ability from borrowers given the weak economic environment. CIMB Thai continues to exercise high credit risk underwriting standards and risk management policies. The Bank also focuses on improving productivity, monitoring collection and managing all accounts closely and effectively.

CIMB Thai Group’s loan loss coverage ratio decreased to 81.6% as at 30 September 2016 from 106.5% at the end of December 2015. As at 30 September 2016, our total provisions stood at THB 7.4 billion showing an excess of THB 2.8 billion over Bank of Thailand’s reserve requirements.

Silicon Review names IFS among 50 best companies to watch in 2016

Ellen Jaudon
Marketing Communications Specialist at IFS North America
The Silicon Review recognized IFS’s strengths, such as its global presence, advanced technology, customer success and its many accolades. The recognition as a “company to watch” supports IFS’s continued commitment to customers and innovation in the enterprise software market. Many of these strengths are valued when companies are selecting a new enterprise software solution.
So how do you determine the right enterprise software for your organization? Outlined below are three tips to help you and your company hit the ground running as you begin the enterprise software selection process.

3 TIPS TO SELECTING THE RIGHT ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE VENDOR
When beginning the enterprise software selection process, selecting the right vendor may seem like a complex task, but the right enterprise software can make complex tasks seem simple. As you begin looking at new enterprise software solutions, consider evaluating these areas:

1. LOOK FOR LEADING TECHNOLOGY
When evaluating an enterprise software vendor, it is essential to consider the product offering and the technology backing the solution. A forward-thinking vendor will push boundaries and challenge the status quo to produce world-class software.
In order for technology to remain cutting edge, a vendor must invest in Research and Development. Vendors that pave the way today but don’t invest in the future will quickly find themselves behind the eight ball. Reviewing a vendor’s roadmap can shed light on the vendor’s plans and priorities for innovations such as: wearable technology, internet of things (IoT), voice recognition, 3D visualization, and more.
Accolades also serve as an excellent way to determine the appropriate enterprise software vendor for your company. Awards and testimonials from customers, analysts and the like provide essential insight into the solution’s benefits. The Silicon Review’s 50 Best Companies to Watch in 2016 is one of many impressive accolades IFS has recently received.
2. IDENTIFY INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE
It’s key for an enterprise software vendor to focus on industries and regions in which your company operates. Selecting a vendor with this knowledge increases the probability that the solution you are selecting can solve the specific challenges your business faces.
A vendor that strives to learn more about the industries it serves often engages directly with customers to ensure that their customers are effectively overcoming the specific industry challenges they face.
Choosing a solution that can serve a range of industries through core processes and industry expertise is crucial. You stand to benefit from a vendor who works with highly regarded industry thought leaders who keep current on top industry trends. A vendor’s industry excellence showcases the software’s ability to benefit your business.
3. GAUGE GLOBAL SCALE
Growth is a common business objective and it should be considered while selecting an enterprise software vendor. The right vendor will support your future growth plans and partner with you to achieve your objectives.
A vendor with functionality to work across different currencies, legislation and languages can provide the flexibility to support growth plans. A vendor with partners and System Integrator networks will mitigate concerns of implementing new sites. Partner and System Integrator networks increase global staffing, allowing for seamless implementations on a global level.
Recognition in leading technology, industry excellence and global scale is part of what makes IFS a “Best Company to Watch in 2016” and a vendor to consider when launching an enterprise software project.

China continues to be the strongest individual market ahead of the USA, delivering double-digit growth

Stuttgart. Stable growth after three quarters: The first nine months of the year have seen Dr. Ing. h.c. F. PorscheAG increase the number of deliveries made by three percent compared with the previous year, with the company delivering a total of 178,314 new vehicles around the world. Key drivers of growth include the 718 Boxster and the Macan. China achieved      a considerable increase of 11 per cent compared with the same period in the previous year, and as such remains the sportscar manufacturers strongest individual market.

Despite the somewhat volatile environment in which we are operating, we have succeeded in increasing our sales figures once again in the first nine months of the year in Europe, Asia and America to surpass even those record figures achieved in 2015,says Detlevvon Platen, Member of the Executive Board responsible for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “The new 718 Boxster has been met with a fantastic response from customers. Since the beginning of the year, we have pushed beyond the 10,000 vehicle milestone with our      Roadster. The 718 Cayman and 911 models have been similarly well received.”

With global deliveries standing at 10,661 (for the Boxster) and 71,086 (for the Macan), both models achieved clear double-digit growth of 20 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. Compared with the same period in the previous year, sales of the classic 911 sportscar also increased with 25,993 vehicles delivered (+5 per cent), as did sales of the Cayman with 8471 vehicles delivered (+4 per cent). Sales of the Panamera were slightly down on the figure seen in the previous year. This is due to the pending model changeover. Von Platen: “Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received about the new Panamera at the motor show in Paris at the end of September, we are extremely optimistic. We believe that the new generation will give us a considerable boost.” The new Panamera has been available to order since 28 June and will be in dealerships in Europe from November.
With 49,229 vehicles delivered in the country, China remains the strongest individual market in the first nine months of the year, ahead of the USA (40,246 deliveries). In Europe, figures increased again by an additional one per cent compared with the high level achieved in the previous year, with 58,678 vehicles delivered. Figures in the German market were down slightly by 0.5 per cent with 22,198 vehicles delivered.
